Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Euro-Pro KP170E Electronic Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Bummed Summary: 1 Stars
Looked for a long time for a Simac Jr., and this looks for all the world like the same thing, so I ordered it and eagerly waited several months before it shipped. Certainly looked heavy-duty. I was confused about the big warning printed on the top of the unit to store it up on one end before using it, so I called customer service for Euro-Pro. And called. And called. Finally got through to the rude customer service person. Hmm. Forget it; I just want to make ice cream. The unit seemed to work ok at first, but when the compressor turned on, it was ear-splittingly loud, like a loud blender or air compressor, and it had to run about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to freeze a batch to "gooey" consistenly. Unit takes 15 minutes to pre-cool, then another 50 minutes supposedly to freeze, but mine took around 90 more minutes. Tasted great using the enclosed recipes, but even running in the garage it was hard to live with, and unlike other similar machines, there is no auto-shut off for the paddle motor; it says you have to stop it immediately when it stops or it will get damaged, so you have to pretty mush sit there the last 15-30 minutes holding your ears and watching it. Maybe mine was defective, so I returned it. I was disappointed and unwilling to try another one. I hope someone else has better luck. I'm beginning to think you just have to spend six bills for the bigger machines to get a decent self-freezing machine. So, I guess for now I'm going to try a cheap reconditioned freeze-the-can style machine.
Description of Euro-Pro KP170E Electronic Ice Cream MakerFully automatic and precisely controlled by a timer, this machine takes the trouble and guesswork out of making ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, and frozen drinks at home. Ingredients go into the bowl, the timer is set, and about 50 minutes later one quart of a frozen confection is ready for consumption. Because the machine doesn't require its bowl to be frozen for hours in a refrigerator's freezer (like less expensive machines that only churn), it can begin making another batch almost immediately. --Fred Brack
